REFLECTION
Experience
It was my first time being exposed to typography as a subject during these 14 weeks. And though it may start off challenging at first since this module emphasizes on the use of letters as an expressional medium, but after some bumps in the road and getting help from doing further readings, I eventually managed to get the hang of it. I realized that while letters themselves are static, the arrangement, distortions and colours and form we give them are what makes them come to life.
Other than that, the classes in these 14 weeks are quite fast paced. With all the lecture recordings we need to watch, progress expectation to meet and blog to update with all the further readings needed, the time usually felt cramped up together. Though I understand that no time can be wasted in this module and with some planning, it can be manageable. And while the classes start of a bit rocky with some limited feedbacks given to our works, but it changes with time and eventually we all had very useful feedbacks which for me, are able to help me monitor my progress and acknowledge what I’m still lacking in my work. All in all, the weeks spent with this module are enjoyable, stressful, challenging and insightful.
Observation
After completing this module, I noticed that typography is an essential knowledge to have for anyone who wishes to do design. While whenever “design” is mentioned, people would immediately think of the visual side of it but typography is equally important as an unproperly type set paragraph, or a wrong font choice can break a design entirely. I also find myself paying more attention to letterings, fonts, alignment and type in general as the weeks progresses in this module. One example is that, whenever I see different serifs or sans-serif fonts that look similar to each other, I tend to pay more attention to the strokes of the letters in each typefaces and try to figure out what makes them different from each other.
Finding
I found that typography is unlike other design modules. While the visual part of art and design does have their respective rules to follow, typography has a more rigid and extensive set of guidelines and rules that needs to be followed closely, especially during the learning phase. While these rules may come off as daunting, they shouldn’t be the limitation when it comes to designing with type. By understanding them, it taught me to be more observational and also encouraged me to be more creative with my approach. It is also worth to note that since words and letters themselves are already tools for communication, a part of learning typography is about learning how to use creative to add flare to them but keeping their characteristics at the same time.
